About DJ Brown Amy and DJ Carnita

The Real Nitty Gritty is the voice of DJ’s Brown Amy + Carnita, a couple of queer DJs who use nothing but original 45 records to throw hip-shaking soul parties in San Francisco and beyond.  They were recently named San Francisco’s Favorite DJ’s by Asterisk SF Magazine.

DJ Brown Amy spins northern soul, garage, psychedelic, boogaloo and everything between and beyond.  She has a real passion for 45s and putting bodies into motion.  Brown Amy has been featured at Soul Clap at 111 Minna and Ooh la la! at Paradise Lounge.

DJ Carnita specializes in girl group grooves, northern soul stompers and early 70’s funky divas. He’s been featured at The Mission Creek Festival, The Capitol Hill Block Party (Seattle), The Hop at Aunt Charlies, All Men are Evil at the Stud and Sophisticated Mama at Havana (Seattle).  He also is the host for Daytime Realness, a monthly display of drag, dancing and debauchery that he co-hosts with Heklina & Stanley Frank.

Brown Amy & Carnita are the resident DJs at Hard French, a monthly soul dance party in San Francisco that has garnered praise in the SF Bay Guardian, The New Gay, SF Weekly, the New York Times and more and previously threw the Beauty Bar SF monthly, The Real Nitty Gritty.  They have been featured together at Homo A GoGo, Fabulosa Fest, Brown Down Crown Parties, the Lexington, the Parkside, Public Works and have played guest DJ sets at award-winning San Francisco clubs like Some Thing at the Stud and Go Bang at Paradise Lounge.  They have also taken their show on the road toting their 45s to Toronto, New York, Portland, Seattle and Austin and were recently featured at Business Woman’s Special in Toronto, at A Hole In My Soul in Portland and at The Hook Up!  showcase at SXSW in Austin, TX.   They have been heard on Bay Area Radio stations like Pirate Cat Radio and KALX Berkeley.
